Our experience in the lower foothills has uncovered a handful of recurring pests plus lots of other surprise visitors who are not as common. Rest assured, if it’s a pest, we can take care of it for you. Below is a list of our most likely suspects.
Annoyed by Ants?
Although ants are known to be extremely hard-working and strong little insects, most people do not like them in their homes crawling all over their counters. We are not big fans of ants as house guests either and work hard to keep your home ant-free. Carpenter ants and odorous house ants are two of the more frequent ant species we encounter.
Carpenter ants are often seen in higher elevations such as Colfax or Dutch Flat. They are notorious for making their nests inside of damp wood. While they don’t consume the wood like termites do, they do infest buildings and are the source of much structural damage. One positive aspect of carpenter ants is that they can help with forest decomposition, which is a necessary part of the forest cycle of life.
If you ever catch yourself smelling bleu cheese out of nowhere, you might be sharing your home with odorous house ants without knowing it. This ant species is one of the most common household pests and they are in all towns that we serve and cover most of the United States. They are pretty resilient, with colonies that have been seen as high as 10,000 ft above sea level. Fortunately, we at Economy Pest Control have a long track record of dealing with odorous house ants. So, if you reside in one of higher elevation towns like Colfax or Dutch Flat, feel free to reach out.
Spider Removal in Colfax, Dutch Flat and Beyond
If you thought ants are bad, wait until you hear about all the spiders that we are likely to encounter. We get calls for many common types of spiders such as cellar spiders, which look like daddy long-legs. Fun fact: there are several species of spider who people refer to as daddy long-legs. Regardless of their family tree, we’ll take care of them for you.
The average size of a cellar spider is anywhere from a quarter to a third of an inch. Fortunately, they are not known to bite people. The only problem, however, is that they are notorious for leaving lots of webs under eaves that can be quite time-consuming to clean.
People who live in higher elevations may also have problems with wolf spiders. These spiders are probably the scariest ones to look at. They generally live outdoors and are more common in Colfax or Dutch Flat. Wolf spiders do not rely on webs, preferring instead to hunt their prey. With 8 eyes in three rows, it’s a good thing they have excellent eyesight, because eyeglasses would look downright silly.
We’ll get calls for tarantulas in the foothills. They appear scary due to their sheer size, but they are not poisonous and are an essential part of the local ecosystem. California ebony tarantulas are ground dwellers and good hunters and are responsible for removing many pests on their own, such as baby rattlesnakes, scorpions, lizards and insects. In fact, the town of Coarsegold near Yosemite celebrates them every fall with an annual Tarantula Festival. They even have a poem contest and a live tarantula derby. If you are bothered by tarantulas, we promise not to read you poems, we’ll just help to keep them away from your house.
Other species of spiders we encounter include black widows, which are 15 times more deadly than common rattlesnakes. Black widows are shiny and black with a red or orange marking on its underside. If you encounter more than one, call to have them removed.
Expert Control of Yellow Jackets, Wasps, Hornets and Bees
Getting stung by a bee or wasp is no fun, which is why we get lots of calls in the summer months to help deal with wasp and hornet nests. It’s especially important if you have an allergy to bee or wasp stings.
One of the most common stinging insects in the Auburn area is yellow jackets. Most people don’t know that yellow jackets are actually wasps. Due to their nearly identical look to regular bees, people tend to mistake them as such. Yellow jackets can be quite aggressive and should be handled by a professional pest control company wearing a sting-proof bee suit.
In cases of other wasps and hornets, removing the nests can be quite dangerous and should not be taken lightly. At lower elevations, these two species of flying insects will nest under the eaves. If you live in higher elevations like Auburn or Dutch Flat, you are more likely to find them in the ground. Regardless of the situation, we at Economy Pest Control are more than happy to take care of these intruders with a specialized approach.
Don’t Let Rodents Take Over Your Home
Mice and rats love the creature comforts of your home. They truly appreciate the wall cavities and attics for their families and other rodent friends. They are also happy about access to food and water, which is another benefit of living in your home. If you are not as excited about rats in your walls as they are, you may want to give us a call. Our many years of experience will make your rodent removal as unobtrusive as possible. We’ve learned through experience to use snap traps instead of poison. A poisoned rat or mouse could end up in your wall cavity and you certainly don’t want that smell in your house. As part of our visit, we examine the rats we catch to determine if they are adults or juveniles, which helps us analyze your problem.
Some of the more common species around here include the Norway and roof rats as well as house mice. The roof rats got that name because they are most commonly found in the attic. Norway rats, on the other hand, like to settle closer to the ground. They are also known as the brown, Parisian, water, or even street/sewer rats. Regardless of the species, call us and we’ll give them the boot!
We Handle Other Bugs Too!
There are many other pests that we see frequently. One category of pest that are very common is bloodsuckers. They include insects like fleas, ticks, bed bugs, and mosquitos. The common factor with all of these is that they will feed on your or your pets’ blood. Additionally, a lot of people tend to have reoccurring issues with cockroaches. Regardless of the pest, we develop a unique approach for each customer based on the elevation, home layout, species age, and more.
